In the choruses I say ‘This is a wasteland, my only retreat.’ I am referring to the shows that we play as a temporary home for those who need it. I was inspired by the letters, messages, and conversations that we’ve had with them over the last couple of years. The upbeat pace of the song along with the loud guitar and drums and even the singer really has an impact on me and I know that I am not the only one who feels this way.Īnother song by this artist that I think speaks to fans is “Hell Above.”- From the same album as A Match Into Water, Collide with the Sky (2012)Ī quote from Vic Fuentes- the lead singer said “I wrote this song for all our fans who feel like they don’t have a home or a place that they fit in. The melody eventually picks up and gets really intense, really bringing the listener into the song and bringing up a lot of emotion. I think that when the song get a bit slowed down around the 20 second mark of the song, it gives the listener something to look forward to. The melody in this song right off the start is coming in hot with some heated guitar and big drums. I think that a lot of the listeners liked these lyrics because they felt like the singer knew them personally and genuinely cared, when they felt like not many other people did. “Make me a promise here tonight, love like a tidal waveĭreamless in early Graves, I never want it to be this way.”Īsking the listener to promise to not involve in self harm. The first being that a lot of teens who were involved in this type of music were also involved with self harm, and the song is very sympathetic however they also make a promise with the listener: I think this set of lyrics stuck out to a lot of teens who listened to this song and type of music for a number of reasons. The song is about when the band, Pierce The Veil went on tour and met with a fan, and a year later they met up with a friend of the fan, only for that friend to tell them that the girl had committed suicide.Īnd I don’t ever want to lose my best friend. One of the songs I am going to tell you about was from my favorite band when I was in this phase of my life. I think this does have a lot to do with the lyrics of the songs, but a lot of social interactions between these bands and their fan bases. I remember seeing memes of people saying that a band saved their life or understood them like nobody else. I remember being in love with a band where all the fans claimed the lead singer- or someone else saved their life. In the fall of 2006, they switched their name to Pierce the Veil, which was the name of a track on the previous Before Today album, and brought on board bassist Jaime Preciado and guitarist Tony Perry. When I first saw what our final project was about- my mind went straight to when I was fifteen years old.

In time, Tancil and Ballatore quit the band, leaving Victor and Mike to start over and rebuild. Before Today played as a unit for several years, and after signing to Equal Vision Records, released the album A Celebration of an Ending in September 2004. The two formed the group in December of 1998, and it was soon turned into a quintet by guitarist Joe Tancil and bassist Mitchell Ballatore. They first started playing together as the band Before Today while students in high school. The heart of San Diego emo-inflected post-hardcore outfit Pierce the Veil lies in two brothers, vocalist/guitarist Vic Fuentes and drummer Mike Fuentes.
